Cultural Communication Differences

This is an interview we conducted with Dr. John Oomen who works in healthcare and health education in a remote part of India. Through his experiences, he has learned many cross-cultural communication principles as well as many keys to successful holistic development initiatives. He is very articulate and most interesting.

Find your greatness

Deep inside all of us, we have this sense of longing to proved ourselves significance. I personally do not why we all have this longing. perhaps, it just past of our original design, our master creator has somewhat pre-installed within us.

A several great sport events just graced by us in last couple months. The biggest of all was of course the London Olympic Games. There were so many great stories of great team/individual athletes whom against all odds, striving to the finishing line, the goal one and only....Olympic Gold medal... I'm looking at people like Michael Phelps, the American swimmer whom he has just become the most decorated Olympian of all time. So what's next?

During the London games, Nike launched this series of TV commercial entitled "Find Your Greatness" which I thought it's come at the right time despite all the marketing purposes behind this campaign for Nike. (Which I am personally a big fan of them by the way. Ain't they just cool gears?) I think this message has got something for us to re-think what we defined "GREATNESS" in our society today.

It wasn't the number of medals or trophies you won that define your greatness. Certainly it wasn't all the certificates, degrees and honors you have received in your academic life. Maybe, the wealth and fortune you have got from your business investment could defined your social status but that wasn't to define your greatness as well.

So what is? What defines our so call....GREATNESS?

I obviously not smart enough to come out with some kind of profound answer to this very profound question. But in my humble attempt to understand what am I here on Earth for and what would motivates me to continue on in this journey we called "LIFE". I do seek to have some clue of what GREATNESS would looks like...really.

God's original design for us is what I'm thinking about.

In Nike's ad, it seems to suggest that greatness is found when we pushed ourselves beyond our idea of who we are or what we can do. Our fear, our disbelief, our inner life, our discipline. Greatness needs no audience. For it needs no approval from anybody. As long as we raise our bar and try to conquer it. That's greatness. It needs no medal.

God has formed us in His very own image to reflect who He is to the world. And when we say God is great, we should also recognized that the Greatness of God is lie within ourselves waiting to be unleashed into the world, manifested in various ways.

I believe that GREATNESS of mankind is the ability to reflect the GREATNESS of GOD in the world in all aspects of life.

When we love our neighbors, when we serve the poor and needy selflessly. That's the GREATNESS of GOD reflect through our actions. When we give our very best in our work or study, when we choose to speak with kind and gentle word instead of something that would hurt others. That's the GREATNESS of God reflect through us. When we choose to love others despite the differences. That's GREATNESS. When we are so fearful but despite all fears, we pushed through in order to safe someone's life. That's GREATNESS.

You see, GREATNESS isn't something we try to reach out to nor something we could earned. It's already reside in us, waiting to be unleashed.

Either you are a professional athlete, a salesman, a CEO, a baker, a housewife, a student, or a girl next door. You can find your GREATNESS by everything that you do to reflect the GREATNESS of GOD in your day-to-day walk with Him. It isn't always easy, but it sure worth it. Be faithful.

#findyourgreatness? let just say #showHisgreatness =)

Canon EOS T4i/650D - great option for low-budget shooter!

I owned a Canon EOS T2i/550D for the last couple of years and have been shooting both still photos as well as video footages out of it. With it's price range (below $1k) it's been delivered a great images thus far. Though in low light condition, you couldn't really compare it with 5DMrkII (or the new MrkIII) but for web content quality. I think T2i does deliver pretty decent low light video footage.

Now that Canon release the latest EOS T4i/650D. I have been looking out for reviews online. What I find is pretty impressive actually. According to this video. Low light video footage from this camera has been greatly improved. (Though I can't really judge much from Youtube video) still it's look pretty decent in my opinion.

http://youtu.be/82IVYW7c8l8

Also new features overall in this camera is pretty cool. hybrid CMOS sensor, touch screen. (Very fancy and come in handy), low light NR, build-in stereo mic, dedicated video mode switch, auto-focus in video mode and the new STM lens. (that 40mm pancake STM lens looks sweet!) I would definitely recommend this camera for folks who couldn't afford 7D or 5DMrkII or 5DMrkIII. It's definitely great alternative. You saved on the body and invest more into good lenses. Can't be disappointed really.

Disclaimer: This comment above is intended for low-budget folks only. If you have ability to spend on 5DMrkIII. By all means...go for it. I love that camera too. I just couldn't afford it. =(

Remember, camera is just an instrument. It's YOU who make all the shots look good. =)

Canon 5DMrkIII vs T2i (550D) comparison.

As a T2i user, I tend to wonder at times if the newer (and of course, more expensive) camera would do a better job? This video review is pretty good and fair comparison showing the pros and cons and similarity of these 2 Canon DSLR camera (in terms of Video shooting). I find it very useful. I hope you do as well. Remember, camera is just a tool. It's how you use it creatively that would deliver a great result for your production.

Jesus, at the Centre of it all...

In this world, we will have trouble..but HE has overcome the world....and so we do...

I was just at the cell group Bible study last night, and we were discussed about Spiritual Discipline, what makes authentic Christian. Then we were looking at the passage in Matthew 7 where Jesus talks about entering into Narrow gate.

In the greek word, Narrow gate referring to "a hard or difficult" way. Jesus told us to "Enter by the narrow gate...For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few". He also mentioned that "For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many".

Life with God is never meant to be easy. It's hard work. Sometime, people will look down on you, misunderstood you, abandoned you. Just like what they did to Jesus back in His days. I was reminded once again that in the society where we keep hearing about the goodness and the grace of God so much, we also must remember the cost of following Jesus. It comes with the package. For where there is hardship or suffering, grace abounds. We must not forget that.

While I'm blogging this, there are two American Christian athletes that are currently be the talk of the town right now. They both are great athletes, great personality, love Jesus and not shy to tell the media that. If you follow them, you will know that some people love them, some people hate them. They make sure the world knows it. Tim Tebow and Jeremy Lin are those guys who choose to honor Jesus in their sport.

I fully aware that being a devout Christian sportsman is definitely not easy. People will mock you, from coaches to teammate, fans, media, etc. I have personally seen all these from TV. It's just painful to hear those comments. It's like you don't bring God into the picture. We are happy down here without Him. Once you bring God in, you are weirdo. I would call that modern day persecution. That's hardship those 2 guys probably have to fight their way throughout the entire career.

So back to my point, indeed walking with Christ in this world isn't easy. Well, no surprise...Jesus already said so. Enter the narrow gate. So we must persevere on. Never give up, throw that word out of your dictionary. Praise Him when your life is at the top of the mountain as well as at the deepest and the darkest valley. He is still there with you. After all, Jesus is at the centre of it all.

When I went to Israel Houghton concert tonight. I was just so overwhelmed by the Joy of the Lord as we joined in worship with him and his band. Then he sang this simple song. I cried. Out of the sudden, huge comfort from God just swept into my heart....

"I AM at the centre of it all Tee." "Hang in there....don't give up on me"....

What a comfort. That's why I love Jesus. He is awesome.

So let's fight the good fight and finish this race well. Remember, Jesus is at the centre of it all. If you tend to be forgetful (like me =p) then listening this simple song, memorize it, and sing it whenever you need to hear these word again and again and again...

http://youtu.be/peqPrmTCN8k

May the Lord of Hope bless you.

ps. May Tebowmania and LINsanity continue....so that the world may know that God is still care about us and want to be involve in our lives....today...in all that you do, like with those ball. Amen. =p

Where does my help come?

"I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore."
Psalm 121:1-8 ESV

This post is just my random thoughts about our Christian duties to help others in need. It came across to me recently, the quote from a very successful Hollywood actor Will Smith saying.

"If you're absent during my struggle, don't expect to be present during my success."

My first response to this was "very true" But yet as a Christian, we are urged to help others who are in need of help. So I thought to myself, I shouldn't be so harsh on this. I will be merciful as Christ has shown me His mercy first. Then another thought struck me.

As I grew up in my Christian walk, often at time people would come and encourage me during the difficult time in life to look to God. For he is one and only hope. Ultimate helper, redeemer. He alone can help you from this difficulty. Nice word, and those fellas just walk away happy that they had said something meaningful to someone.

I don't mean to blame those well-meaning Christians really. But it got me thinking. "Is this what really Jesus taught us to be as a Christian?"

When we look at the life of Christ we would quickly realized that He came and met the needs of the people. He healed countless of people physically, emotionally & spiritually. Nowhere in the Bible that suggested Jesus ignored the need in front of his eyes and tell people to trust God to help them. He himself be hands and feet of God to help them. Now, that is what I am talking about.

I believe, it is absolutely right to trust God that He would rescued us in time of trouble. But I also recognized that God often move through people. We as the body of Christ are God's instruments of love. He could do all the miraculous stuffs on His own, but He chose us! He chose to move through us! What a privilege! To be Hands and Feet of Jesus.

I urge you bros and sis(s) in this great body of Christ. Never ignore people who needs your help. Of course, say a word of prayer for them is the least you could do, but if you could go extra miles for them...why not? I believe that's what Jesus has done for all of us. He went all the way even to the point of sacrificed His very own life. He has set ultimate example for us to follow. Amazing God.

Christianity is a community of love. If we failed to do just that. We are no longer rightly represent Christ.

I guess this reflection comes at the right time in the month of love. (February) Let's go out there and show some love!!

"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'"
Matthew 25:34-40 ESV

Dear Almighty God (My letter to God)

Dear Almighty God,

I want to live my life from now on in such a way that would honor You in every aspects of my life. Though there will be some difficulties and adjustments that need to be made along the way, Lord I choose to trust in Your sovereignty.

I know You are good, therefore Your plans are good to me. I will seek to know You and allow the Holy Spirit to shape my character to become more like You.

Teach me to surrender my life to you each day in these areas,

My standard of living. I need not easy or comfortable, but Your grace that strengthen me. For I want to be faithful with all that you have given to me. As I learn to be a good steward of your resources, then shall I be a channel of blessings to others around me.

My dreams and my goals in life. Instead of asking You to let me have it my way, I ask that let You have it Your way in my life! For truly, Your way is better than my own.

My education and career. I need not to prove anything to anyone. I don't need all those additional letters to follow my name. I don't need any title to become someone special. All I need is Your name to go before me, Your favor to open door for me, and all I really want to do is to be pleasing to You. So the path I choose in my education and career are yours Lord.

My family. I thank you for giving each of them to me. I know they are not the best, but through them, I've become who I am today. I know that You were there throughout this process Lord, I'm grateful. So I surrender my family to you. Bless them Lord, and lead them to the path of Your righteousness.

Last but not least, I surrender to You my years on earth, I do not wish for long and eventful life. All I ask is that You use me to be an instrument of love and truth to touch Nations as long as You see fits. And I shall looking forward to that day when I meet you face to face in fullness of Your glory and that You say to me "Well done my beloved child!" And hopefully, I would leave a legacy behind for the generations to come.

This little light of mine is Yours,
Tee Suwit L.
